Heart of the House hospitality team working behind the scenes to support guest experience

Heart of the House hospitality is the foundation of every great guest experience—yet the people who make it possible are often hidden behind outdated language.

Throughout my tenure and still today, in the world of hospitality and restaurant management, the phrase "back of the house" has long been used to refer to the team members working behind the scenes—chefs, line cooks, dishwashers, housekeepers and maintenance staff. These are the individuals who, away from the spotlight of the dining room, labor tirelessly to ensure that each guest's experience is seamless and memorable. However, the term "back of the house" fails to capture the vital role these team members play. It's time to stop using this outdated phrase and recognize these workers for what they truly are: the "Heart of the House" hospitality teams.

1. Acknowledge the Central Role They Play

The term "back of the house" implies a secondary, supporting role—one that is hidden, perhaps less important than the more visible positions in the "front of the house." This couldn't be further from the truth. Without the culinary and operational expertise of these team members, a hospitality organization could not function. The meals that delight diners, the cleanliness that ensures health and safety, and the efficient operations that keep everything running smoothly all originate in the "back of the house." By calling it the "Heart of the House," we honor the central, indispensable role these team members play in the success of any hospitality business, its people operations.

2. Promote Respect and Dignity

Language shapes perception. When we refer to certain team members as being in the "back," it can unintentionally diminish their perceived importance and status within the organization. This language can reinforce a hierarchy that undervalues the contributions of those who work in these roles. Referring to these departments as the "Heart of the House" elevates the dignity of these workers, acknowledging that they are at the core of the business. They are not mere background players; they are essential to the operation's heartbeat.

3. Foster a Unified Team Culture

In any successful business, especially in hospitality, teamwork is crucial. However, the divide between the "front" and "back" of the house can create a cultural rift within a team, leading to misunderstandings and lack of appreciation for each other's roles. Reframing the terminology to "Heart of the House" encourages a sense of unity and mutual respect among all team members. It reminds everyone that they are working toward a common goal: delivering an exceptional guest experience.

4. Reflect the True Essence of Hospitality

Hospitality is about more than just service; it’s about warmth, care, and making people feel valued. The term "Heart of the House" aligns with this philosophy, conveying that those who work behind the scenes are equally integral to the guest experience.

They are the ones who infuse each dish with love, ensure the environment is welcoming, and maintain the standards that guests have come to expect. By recognizing these team members as the heart of the operation, we reinforce the idea that hospitality is a whole effort, where every team member's contribution is vital.

5. Empower Team Members and Enhance Job Satisfaction

Words have power. When team members in these roles are referred to as the "Heart of the House," it can instill a greater sense of pride and ownership in their work. This simple shift in language can lead to higher job satisfaction, as workers feel more appreciated and recognized for their critical contributions. A team that feels valued is more likely to be engaged, motivated, and committed to excellence, which in turn leads to better outcomes for the business as a whole.

The hospitality and restaurant industry thrives on the collective efforts of its people. It's time we update our language to reflect the true value of those who work behind the scenes. By embracing the term "Heart of the House," we honor the central role these team members play, promote a culture of respect and unity, and ultimately enhance the overall guest experience. Let’s recognize these individuals for what they truly are—the beating heart of hospitality.
